The Good Robot Podcast: Exploring Gender, Feminism, and Technology

Hosted by Eleanor Drage and Kerry McInerney, The Good Robot is a podcast that delves into the intricate intersections of gender, feminism, and technology.

The Good Robot Hot Take: Does AI Know How You Feel?

In this episode, we return from our summer break to discuss a recent research paper co-authored by Kerry and AI ethicist and researcher Os Keyes, titled The Infopolitics of Feeling: How Race and Disability are Configured in Emotion Recognition Technology. We examine why AI tools that claim to read emotions from facial expressions are both scientifically and politically questionable. The discussion also covers the ableist foundations of Affectiva, once the world’s leading emotion AI company. Kerry shares how the 2020 Stop Asian Hate and Black Lives Matter movements inspired this research project and explains why she believes emotion recognition technologies should not be part of our societies.
